On a a Clio 2, the service light that stays on after an oil change is one of the most common annoyances. We changed the oil, replaced the filter, and yet the orange light still flashes at startup. The problem does not come from the mechanics, but from an internal counter that has not been reset. The procedure depends on the type of dashboard installed in your vehicle, and this is where most tutorials go too fast.
Identify the type of dashboard before any manipulation on Clio 2
The Clio 2 was produced over a long period, with several evolutions of the instrument cluster. There are mainly two configurations: models equipped with a small push button on the face of the speedometer (often phase 1 and early phase 2 versions), and those equipped with a right stalk with scrolling buttons (late phases 2 and 3).
Before touching anything, we look at the dashboard. If a button protrudes above or below the odometer, the long press procedure applies. If the vehicle displays onboard information via the right stalk (the lever behind the steering wheel, passenger side), the method involves navigating through the menus.
Choosing the wrong procedure does not break anything, but you can go in circles for a quarter of an hour without results. The resetting of the Clio 2 oil change light follows a different logic depending on these two scenarios.

Resetting the oil change light using the speedometer button
This method concerns Clio 2s whose dashboard has a physical button directly on the cluster. We work with the engine off, key in the ignition position (the dashboard lights up, but the engine does not run).
- Turn on the ignition without starting the engine, then press the speedometer button and hold it down until a countdown in seconds appears on the screen
- Wait for the countdown to reach zero without releasing the pressure, then press briefly again when the display flashes or prompts you
- Turn off the ignition, wait a few seconds, then turn the ignition back on to check that the service light has disappeared and that the maintenance interval shows a new countdown
If the light comes back immediately after turning off the ignition, start over from the beginning. Feedback varies on this point: some versions require holding the button longer than others.
Resetting the Clio 2 oil change light via the right stalk
On versions equipped with a right control stalk, the logic is different. We do not use a button on the speedometer, but the scrolling buttons on the lever located behind the steering wheel.
Navigate to the maintenance interval menu
With the ignition on but the engine off, briefly press the up or down button on the stalk to scroll through the displayed information. Look for the “Maintenance Interval” menu or a similar message related to maintenance.
Once positioned on this menu, hold the up or down button for about ten seconds. The display should switch to fixed mode with a new interval value. The reset is effective when the service light goes out on the dashboard.
Verification after the manipulation
Turn off the ignition, wait a few seconds, then turn the key back to the ignition position. The oil change light should no longer appear. If the reminder returns, it may indicate a problem with the cluster or a procedure incompatibility with the exact version of the vehicle. In this case, using an OBD diagnostic tool remains the reliable solution.

Oil change light and oil pressure light: do not confuse on the Clio 2
We regularly see Clio 2 owners attempting a reset when the illuminated light is not the maintenance one. The oil pressure light (red, in the shape of a can) has nothing to do with the oil change reminder. If this red light stays on while the engine is running, it indicates a lubrication fault that can cause engine damage.
The procedure described in this article only concerns the scheduled maintenance reminder, the orange light or the text message that appears at startup. A red oil pressure light requires an immediate engine shutdown and a check of the oil level, or even a mechanical diagnosis.
Clio 2 maintenance: what resetting the counter does not do
Resetting the oil change light simply returns the maintenance counter to its starting point. This action does not replace the oil change or the oil filter replacement. If you clear the reminder without actually performing the maintenance, the counter will restart for a new cycle, but the used oil will continue to circulate in the engine.
The Clio 2 service booklet remains the reference for determining the appropriate oil change intervals for your engine. Operating conditions also matter: short trips in the city or driving in a dusty environment may justify more frequent oil changes than what the counter suggests.
On a vehicle of this age, rigorous maintenance tracking protects the mechanics far more than a light turned off on the dashboard. You do the oil change first, then reset the counter, and not the other way around.
